Travel Tips & Insights for Indian Visitors Traveling Abroad
Travelling from India to North America rewards a little planning. Here are the essentials for Indian visitors heading to the USA and Canada.
Visa and travel documents
Secure your visa well in advance. For the USA, apply at least 2–3 months before departure due to limited appointment availability. Canada may require a Temporary Resident Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Keep copies of your passport and key documents handy, with digital backups for security.
Health and travel insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is critical — healthcare costs in both countries are high. Make sure your cover includes medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost belongings.
Currency and money matters
Carry a mix of local currency and international credit cards. Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid blocked transactions, and exchange currency before you arrive — airport rates are usually unfavourable.
Weather preparation
Pack for the season. The southern USA is warmer, while northern regions and Canada have cold winters demanding thermal wear and heavy coats. Layers are your best friend for unpredictable weather.
Packing essentials
Bring a universal travel adapter (North America uses Type A/B outlets at 120V), comfortable walking shoes, and — within import rules — a few familiar Indian snacks.
Transport, connectivity and food
Big cities like New York, Toronto and Vancouver have reliable public transit; smaller towns may need a car rental. Uber and Lyft are widely available. Pick up a local SIM or roaming plan, and use WhatsApp to stay in touch. Indian restaurants are easy to find in major cities — and on our tours, Indian meals are included daily.
Etiquette, taxes and safety
Respect local customs around queuing, punctuality and personal space. Store prices exclude tax, so expect extra at checkout; tipping is customary at 15–20%. Dial 911 for emergencies in both countries, keep valuables secure, and exercise normal caution in unfamiliar areas after dark.
